Kansas City Chiefs History
Without the effort of Lamar Hunt, the Kansas City Chiefs would never have existed. The AFL wouldn't exist either. Back in the late 1950's, Hunt wanted an NFL expansion into Dallas but was rejected and instead, decided to create his own league in reflection of baseball's American and National leagues. The Dallas Texans were looking for a new home and the Kansas City Mayor, H. Roe Bartle, began to take interest. In order to gain the Dallas Texans, Bartle had to prove the city's desire to bring in a team. At Municipal Stadium, Mayor Bartle (also nicknamed 'Chief') promised three-times the season ticket holders and an additional 3,000 seats to be placed in the stadium and 11,000 temporary bleacher seats.
On May 22, 1963, Hunt announced the move, and the Dallas Texans were officially headed to Kansas City. The Kansas City Chiefs began playing in 1964. In 1966, Len Dawson led the league in passing and the Chiefs ended with an 11-2-1 record.
In 1967, the Kansas City Chiefs maintained last season's momentum and took the AFL title from the Buffalo Bills. With this victory in the bag, the Kansas City Chiefs prepared for a journey to the first ever NFL vs AFL World Championship game. On January 15, 1976, Vince Lombardi and his team, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Chiefs 35-10.
1968 began the debate in Kansas City for a new stadium in a new location. Finally, Jackson County was voted as the new location for a stadium and construction began. The following year the Chiefs defeated the Raiders to become the AFL champions and prepared for Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings. The Chiefs defense had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries and held the Vikings to one touchdown. Len Dawson led the offense to 23 points and was named MVP and the Kansas City Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 1968.
The Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl after a fifty-year drought in February of 2020, defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Miami. Led by MVP Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs are poised to become the league's next dynasty. After a loss to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl in 2021, the Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl in 2023 to take on the Philadelphia Eagles. In a high-scoring game and a duo between the Kelce brothers, Patrick Mahomes secured his second Super Bowl MVP, and the Chiefs defeated the Eagles 38-35 to tally their third Super Bowl and second in the last two years. The Chiefs won their most recent Super Bowl in 2024, defeating the San Francisco 49ers in overtime by a score of 25-22 in Las Vegas to become back-to-back champions. The Kansas City Chiefs were the first team to win back-to-back championships since 2004.
