This Baklava Latte combines the rich and bold taste of coffee with the sweet, nutty, and aromatic elements reminiscent of baklava. It is quick and easy to make at home and requires very little ingredients.

This Baklava Latte is a coffee-based beverage inspired by the flavors of the traditional baklava dessert. If you love this classic dessert or if you are a fan of anything honey or nutty, you are going to be obsessed with this latte recipe.

This recipe was inspired by a Baklava Latte I had at a charming brunch spot in South Tampa, Psomi. I found myself daydreaming about this delicious flavor combo and had to give a shot at replicating the drink at home. I hope you love this latte as much as I do, enjoy!

What is Baklava?

Baklava is a sweet, flaky pastry that is enjoyed in many parts of the world, especially in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. The name “baklava” itself is of Turkish origin, and the dish has become a staple of Turkish cuisine. However, it is also popular in other parts of the world, including the Balkans, the Middle East, and North Africa. Baklava has become especially popular in Greece, where it is often served during special occasions such as weddings, baptisms, and religious holidays.

The recipe for baklava has evolved over time, with different regions and cultures adding their own unique twists. Traditionally, baklava is made by layering thin sheets of phyllo pastry with chopped nuts, such as pistachios, walnuts, or almonds, and honey or syrup. The pastry is then baked until golden brown and crispy.

Why you will love this recipe:

  • Unique flavor: The combination of espresso or coffee with the sweetness of praline syrup, honey, cinnamon, and vanilla extract creates a unique and delicious flavor profile. The blend of warm spices and the nutty undertones reminiscent of baklava make it a satisfying beverage.
  • Familiarity and nostalgia: Baklava is a beloved dessert in many cultures, and the Baklava Latte allows you to enjoy those familiar flavors in a new and exciting way.
  • Cost Effective: this Baklava Latte tastes like something you would get at your local coffee shop or at Starbucks but for half the cost. It is also super easy to make at home.
  • Versatile: The recipe can be customized to suit personal preferences. You can use different types of milk, such as whole milk or almond milk, to cater to your dietary needs or preferences. You can also adjust the sweetness by adding more or less honey and syrup.

Overall, this Baklava Latte recipe offers a delightful combination of flavors, a sense of familiarity, and a cozy, comforting experience that can appeal to those who love the taste of baklava or those looking to try something new and delicious. It also has similar tasting notes to the Praline Latte at Starbucks, which is one of my favorites and a beloved flavor by many Starbucks lovers.

Equipment

  • An espresso machine to brew high-quality espresso. You can also use a coffee machine to make strongly-brewed coffee if an espresso machine is not an option.
  • An electric frother or hand-held frother to create the silky milk texture for the latte. See the tips section below if you don’t have access to a frother.

Tips

If you don’t have a milk steamer or frother, heat up your milk in a microwave safe jar and shake it vigorously with the lid on for 30-40 seconds to create milk froth for your latte.

Use high-quality espresso if you can, it really affects the overall flavor and quality of a latte. Grinding high-quality espresso beans right before you pull your shots is also a must for a well-balanced latte.

When properly steamed, the milk should have a glossy appearance with a slightly thicker consistency than plain milk. It should be pourable and have a velvety texture that blends well with the espresso or coffee.

Substitutions

  • What if I don’t have praline syrup? Try adding ½ tablespoon of caramel syrup and ¼ teaspoon of almond extract
  • No espresso machine? You can use strongly brewed coffee or instant espresso if you don’t have an espresso machine or espresso on hand.
  • Adjust the sweetness. I personally don’t like a lot of sugar in my coffee as I don’t want it to overpower the espresso’s rich flavors. However, please add more or less praline syrup and honey depending on your preference.
  • Espresso is too strong? Try using only a single shot or strongly brewed coffee instead if 2 shots of espresso comes off too strong for you. You don’t need to adjust the recipe if you use only one shot of espresso, the coffee flavor will just not be as strong.
