Baked beans are the perfect side dish for so many meals, especially barbecues. I’ll admit that I usually just open up a can of beans, dump it in a pan, heat it up and serve as is. And there’s nothing wrong with that! But if you want to wow everyone or take those canned beans up at least a few notches, this recipe is perfect for that!

APPLE PIE BAKED BEANS

Apple Pie Baked Beans are made by starting with a can of baked beans. Add a can of apple pie filling, barbecue sauce, barbecue seasoning, bacon, onion and then bake it all together! The mix of flavors are absolutely incredible!

What to serve with baked beans?

Baked beans go great with so many meals! We love them with baked potatoes, but they really do go so well with any type of barbecue. Try making them with our popular Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork or Grilled Flank Steak. Add some Easy Mango Fruit Salad and a batch of 30-Minute Dinner Rolls and you’ve got a delicious dinner! Well, as long as you don’t forget dessert. Maybe try our Easy Cherry Chocolate Cake or No-Bake Strawberry Cheesecake!

What beans are in baked beans?

Baked beans are normally made with white beans. Northern beans, navy beans and cannellini beans are all types of white beans. Bush’s Baked Beans are made with navy beans.

INGREDIENTS IN APPLE PIE BAKED BEANS

Apple Pie Filling – You will need a sixteen ounce can of apple pie filling. Make sure there isn’t sugar added. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try a different kind of pie filling (cherry, peach, etc).

BBQ Sauce – Any type of BBQ sauce will work. I really love Kinder’s or Sweet Baby Rays, but there are lots of brands and varieties that are great.

BBQ Seasoning – You will need a couple of tablespoons of BBQ Seasoning. You can find this by all of the other spices and seasonings at the grocery store. McCormick makes one that is very common, but there are other brands as well. There are also a lot of recipes out there – it’s pretty easy to make your own with a few different spices!

Bacon – The recipe calls for 8 slices of raw bacon, cut into small pieces. If you’re like me and you love bacon, go ahead and add a few more slices! You can cut it up with a knife, but I have found that it’s much easier to cut raw bacon with a sharp pair of kitchen shears.

Onion – Adding a diced onion adds a lot of flavor to the beans. I usually always cheat with this one to save some time and I keep a stock of chopped onions in my freezer. I just buy them from the frozen section at the grocery store on most visits so that I never run out – that way I always have onions on hand, but I don’t ever have to chop them!

Bush’s Original Baked Beans – You will need about 55 ounces of Bush’s Original Baked Beans. Sometimes it is tricky to find the 55 ounce cans, so you can use two 28 ounce cans if that’s easier! If you want to change up the

HOW TO MAKE APPLE PIE BAKED BEANS

Preheat the oven to 325°.

Add the apple pie filling, barbecue sauce, and barbecue seasoning to a blender or food processor and pulse until just combined (we just want to make the apples into slightly smaller chunks). Cover and set aside.

Cook the bacon and diced onion over medium-high heat in a large skillet until the bacon is browned and the onions are translucent. Remove the skillet from the heat. Drain the bacon grease until 1-2 tablespoons are left in the pan.

Place the apple pie mixture and the baked beans into the skillet and gently stir together with the bacon and onions. If your skillet is cast-iron and able to be put in the oven, you can just put the skillet in the oven to bake. Or you can pour the beans into a 9×13 pan to bake.

Bake the beans uncovered for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!

BAKED BEAN VARIATIONS

If you want to change up the flavors in your baked beans, there are lots of ways to do that!

  • Change the pie filling! Apple pairs so well with the beans, but I think that peach or cherry would work well too, so feel free to experiment!
  • Add more veggies! Jalapeno and bell peppers both go great with baked beans. You can also add some garlic if you’d like!
  • Try a different flavor of beans! The recipe calls for Bush’s Original Baked Beans, but they have several different varieties, like Honey Sweet or Sweet Heat.
